How often should I change coolant in a custom cooled system?

It is generally recommended that you change the coolant in a custom cooled system every 12–24 months. This variation is down to the fact that different builds have different requirements. Custom cooling has many variables, and in some systems, depending on what parts are used (radiators, blocks etc.) and whether they are new or old, this can have a major influence on the longevity of the coolant.

Traditional clear coolants have a reputation for lasting longer than their colored counterparts, and you might find that you will never even have to change out the coolant in your system.

A few things to keep a look out for that can indicate it's time to change your coolant, or perform an overall loop maintenance check, are:

  • Higher temperatures in your loop
  • Visible particles clogging your blocks
  • Debris in your reservoir.

If you spot any of these, then a coolant change is a good place to start.

In the above video we go into details on how you should drain and refill your custom cooling system.
