How to update firmware on the CORSAIR M55 WIRELESS gaming mouse

Given that the M55 WIRELESS is our first gaming mouse to be powered by a single AA battery instead of an internal, unremovable one. Benefits to this include a battery life orders of magnitude larger than what it would have been with an unremovable one, and less environmental impact. (Provided that the end-user disposes of batteries in the correct way at least.)

This means we no longer need the option of plugging the mouse into a computer, so we can get rid of the USB Type-C port, too. This means we had to figure out a way of delivering firmware updates to the mouse wirelessly though, as a cable method simply wasn't on the cards. The process is a little different from what you’re familiar with, so we’re going to outline it here.

  • Make sure iCUE Software is installed and fully up to date.
  • Ensure that the M55 has at least medium battery life left – iCUE will show you this. Alternatively, turn the mouse on, and check the color of the light that appears behind the scroll wheel. If it's yellow or green, you're good to go. If it's red, slap a fresh AA battery in there.
  • Click on the M55 WIRELESS module, then click the gear icon to open the Device Settings window. It will probably already notify you that there’s a new update. If not, click “Check for Updates”. This will start the process. You'll be guided through the correct sequence, but we’ll talk you through it here, too.
updating m55 wireless firmware step 1
  1. Turn the mouse off.
  2. Hold the foward and back buttons – the two buttons on the side of the mouse – down. While keeping those two held down, press the power button on the underside for three seconds. The LED just behind the scroll wheel will blink white. You can now release the power button.
  3. Between the 5th and 6th blink, let go of both side buttons, and the process will begin. If you let go of the side buttons too early or too late, just close the update window down, and start from the beginning.

Keep the mouse close to the dongle until the progress bar finishes. This will take longer than you're used to for a firmware update as the data transmission speed OTA (Over the Air) is far slower than it is through a USB cable.
