AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT vs Ryzen 7 5800X: What's the difference?

AMD has recently released the all new AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT. It's an impressive CPU for sure, but it's arguably merely an update to the venerable Ryzen 7 5800X. However, it might not be quite that simple, as both processors do cater to slightly different applications and use cases. So, let's take a look at the specs, price, and performances differences between the two.

5800XT and 5800X Specs

Cores Threads Base Clock Turbo Clock L1-Cache L2-Cache L3-Cache TDP
5800XT 8 16 3.8 GHz 4.8 GHz 512 KB 4 MB 32 MB 105 W
5800X 8 16 3.8 GHz 4.7 GHz 512 KB 4 MB 32 MB 105 W

Power and Performance

As we can see, the only difference is that the 5800XT has a higher turbo clock. With many specifications being identical, performance will be relatively similar. The primary impact we'd see in real-life is for single-core tasks like gaming, thanks to the higher clock speed, but the improvement is still considered marginal. Both CPUs are highly capable for tasks such as video editing or machine learning. The 5800XT, however, will in all likelihood perform better overall, if only by a small amount.

Since both chips have the same TDP, they will consume the same amount of energy and should dissipate a similar amount of heat. Both chips are considered high-end models, so coolers like the A115 Air Cooler or 360mm/420mm AIOs are well-recommended, especially given that the 5800X does not come with a cooler at all. The 5800XT does include AMD's Wraith Prism cooler, but we'd always recommend something higher-performance than the in-box cooler for any mid-high end CPU.

5800XT AND 5800X Price

  • Ryzen 7 5800XT Price: $249.99/£239.99
  • Ryzen 7 5800X Price: $179.99/£139.99

At the time of writing, the Ryzen 7 5800X is a more cost-effective option at $179.99 as it offers nearly-identical performance for gaming and everyday applications. By comparison, the Ryzen 7 5800XT retails at $249.99, making it 39% more expensive. $60 is a pretty significant price difference, so if the 5800X is still available - it'd be the better bet.

It is important to note that the 5800XT comes with the Wraith Prism cooler however, but depending on whether you plan on purchasing a more capable cooler - the price difference can be put towards the cooler.

Ryzen 7 5800XT or Ryzen 7 5800X? Which should I get?

Both processors are excellent options, depending on specific requirements and budget. In our opinion, it primarily boils down to whether you plan to pair the CPU with a good cooling solution from CORSAIR, be it an AIO, an Air Cooler, or even a custom loop.
