How to Upgrade RAM in Your Laptop

Upgrading your laptop memory is generally a quick and easy way to get more performance out of your system, resulting in a snappier experience with fewer slow-downs while working on large creative projects, playing games, or being able to have more than six Chrome tabs open at once.

So, we're going to make a brief step-by-step guide to make the process super easy. You can watch the video above, or follow the steps below. Let's get to it.

1. Turn off the Laptop

It sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how you can forget the mundane when you want to use the new, shiny thing. You know, like squeezing memory into your laptop. Fully shut down the laptop and wait until it's making no sound whatsoever.

2. Unscrew the Bottom Panel

Laptop RAM Upgrade step 2 - remove screws

Using a CORSAIR VOYAGER gaming laptop as an example, remove all 11 screws from the underside of the laptop. Stash these somewhere safe. A magnetic parts tray is ideal, but an empty bowl or coffee mug works, too.

3. Carefully Remove the Bottom Panel

Gently pull the edges of the panel upwards to remove it. Using a thin plastic spacer tool can help here. Do not use metal spacers as they can scratch or bend the panel.

4. Install your new SO-DIMM Kit

Laptop RAM Upgrade step 4 - install new sodimm RAM kit

Carefully peel the covers back to expose the SO-DIMM slots. Take care not to rip the covers off, they are vital to protect the memory modules. The slot in a SO-DIMM is ever-so-slightly off-centre, meaning you can only install it one way. The correct way. Gently pull the old modules out, and press the new ones in equally gently.

5. Put the Laptop back together

Almost done. Make sure the covers are over the memory modules, and simply reverse the process. Remembering to replace every screw to fully secure the bottom panel. Then power on the laptop and you're good to go. Your new memory should be automatically detected and setup, ready to roll.
