We’re going to find the best PSU for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 today, which is handy as it has quickly become the go-to mid-to-high end GPU offering a decent price to performance ratio. Additionally, it’s not quite as power thirsty as its older siblings Mr. RTX 4080 and Miss RTX 4090. Luckily, CORSAIR produces PSUs covering the entire gamut of modern PSU power requirements. Firstly, here’s the absolute bare minimum you’ll need to run an RTX 4070, then we’ll get into our choices, for those of you who like to have a bit more than the bare minimum.
RTX 4070 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
So, as long as you've got sufficient power for the above, you should be good. However, as with most GPUs, different brands will recommend different PSU wattages. Additionally, this list is not is not exhaustive, so you should always check your specific RTX 4070 to make sure you’re good. That said, all our selections later down the page will be safe choices.
Model | TDP (Thermal Design Power) | Minimum Recommended PSU |
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 (Founder's Edition) | 200W | 650W |
ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 4070 | 200W | 600W |
MSI NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 12GB VENTUS 2X OC | 200W | 650W |
ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 4070 GAMING OC | 200W | 550W |
PALIT GeForce RTX™ 4070 Dual OC | 200W | 750W |
Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 12GB WINDFORCE OC | 200W | 650W |
Interestingly, the TDP is consistent, but the manufacturer-recommended PSU wattage varies a lot. Given that it tops out at 750W, we’ll hover around 850W just to give you a bit more breadth for future upgrades. We’ll also provide a lower-wattage option for those of you who live fearlessly, unintimidated by the possibility of transient power spikes destroying your hardware.
Our top choice must be our RM850x SHIFT. Most of our PSUs are modular these days. Older PSUs just had every possible cable poking out of them. This meant that you had to manage them all even if you had no use for the spare ones.
Modular PSUs, by comparison, make each cable detachable on both ends, so you only need to deal with the ones you actually need and are using. You can then stash the spare ones somewhere safe an add them as and when you need.
Where the RM850x SHIFT is different, though, is that the connecters are mounted on the side, allowing you to curve them straight up behind the motherboard tray for more direct cable runs. Additionally, the space adjacent to the PSU, usually reserved for storage, is now easier to access as the cables have been rotated outta there.
As mentioned earlier, we chose 850W to allow for not only the thirstiest of RTX 4070s, but also for more expansion, with the modular interface of the SHIFT series helping to make this expansion even more simple.

Many people have moved past wanting a monolith PC case as a centerpiece of their setup, preferring a small form factor build. Additionally, those with small desks in cramped rooms might not have the space for large cases such as the CORSAIR 5000T. So you might be looking for something like the 2000D AIRFLOW RGB. For this, though, you’ll need an SFX power supply, so we’re going with the CORSAIR SF850L. Plenty of power and full modularity, simply compressed to save space.

If you’re uninterested in side-mounted connections or small PC builds and just want a quiet PSU, then the CORSAIR RM850 is the correct choice. The fan of the RM850 won’t even move until you’re using 340W, so if you’re just wiling away the hours on reddit, your PSU fan might not even spin up.

If you’re trying to keep your build to a strict budget, and doubt you’ll be adding anything new for a while, then 650W is technically all you need for an RTX 4070. If this sounds like you, then the CORSAIR RM650 sounds like what you need.

So, there's the best PSU for the RTX 4070, plus some other options depending on your priorities. You can find them, our entire PSU lineup, and anything else for a PC gaming setup over at our main retail site.
How long is the warranty on a CORSAIR PSU?
All our PSUs come with a minimum of a 3-year warranty, with many holding 10-year warranties. You can find the warranty for each specific PSU on our support site.
Are there still issues with the 12VHPWR connector?
Following the release of the 12VHPWR standard, there were some incidences of the connector melting, due to it not being fully-seated when connected. This is avoidable, just make sure the cable is fully connected at both ends, and avoid bending the connector during the cable management process. Our PCIe 5.0 12VHPWR GPU Power Bridge can help with that, allowing for neater cable management, and a lower likelihood of the cable being bent too much. (Just check it will work with your specific RTX 4070. The heatsink and backplate design can vary a lot and might interfere with the bridge.)
What does the "80 Plus" symbol mean?
This is an industry-standard way ofvalidating the efficiency of a power supply. All our PSUs, including those on this list, carry a certification of Gold or higher.
Are all PSU cables compatible with all PSUs?
No. there are different standards and connector types at play here. This means you have to be very careful. Check out our compatibility matrix to make sure. Plugging the wrong type of cable into your PSU, or any other component in your system can have disastrous consequences.
Still not sure which power supply is right for you? Why not try out our Power Supply Calculator. Just choose your components and we will calculate the best PSU for your specific pc setup.
