The benefits of a standing desk

Anyone who's ever gone from a waiter, retail worker, or otherwise blue-collar job to a comfy office job will be aware of the surprisingly fast loss of fitness that occurs after the switch. Additionally, the lockdowns that occurred due to COVID-19 exacerbated this issue. As a result, standing desks have become more and more common in a bid to mitigate some of the health concerns that arise from sitting down all day. So, how does a standing desk help? Let's take a closer look.

health benefits

Posture is the most obvious benefit of a standing desk. when standing, it becomes far less tempting to hunch over forward. This means that the muscles in your back will start to develop, as they are supporting your body for longer periods. This will initially manifest in an aching back.

However, those who have held sedentary office jobs shouldn't leap straight into action and stand at a shiny new standing desks all day every day. This will hurt and can actually have some negative effects on the legs, knees, and feet. Given that you've been sitting down for 8 hours per day, going straight to the opposite straight away is not the best idea.

So, if you invest in a standing desk, for example our upcoming standing desk the Platform:6, take it slow initially. Spend a couple hours standing the first day, then four, then 6, then 8+. This will help the rest of your body acclimate to the new pressures on new parts of your body.

Additionally, standing desks can actually help with your breathing. It makes sense when you think about it, as you're less prone to hunching over, you'll automatically have a more 'open' chest.

If you're tempted by the idea of a standing desk, then stick around, as we've got loads more info on the Platform:6 desk coming very soon.
