If you’ve spent any amount of time in the PC gaming world over the last ten or so years, you might have heard much hubbub about “mechanical keyboards”, but what does that actually mean?
Like many PC gaming terms, the name describes basically nothing. So, we thought we’d take a moment to tell you what a mechanical keyboard is, how it compares to a “regular” keyboard, and why you should consider getting one. Let’s go.

"Mechanical” is such a vague word here. If you take the word at face value, surely all keyboards are mechanical in some sense, right?
In this instance, keyboards are only considered “mechanical” if they use switches that operate using springs. This differentiates them from the more common “membrane” keyboards, which use a flexible membrane to create the up-and-down motion of the key.
Membrane keyboards don’t feel as nice, but they are far cheaper to produce, which is why these are the keyboards that typically come with desktop PCs. More details about the differences can be found in our Mechanical vs. Membrane article.
We can’t say exactly because this is all about personal preference. What we can say, however, is that people do find it hard to go back to a membrane keyboard after trying a mechanical one, so take from that what you will.
Due to the modular design of mechanical keyboard switches, several different parts of the switch can be altered to create basically limitless variations in feel and sound. This means that mechanical keyboards can have a more varied feel and sound as compared to normal keyboards, but of course, this comes at a price premium. However, that premium isn’t as high as it used to be, so even the casual computer user might be tempted to upgrade.
First and foremost is the improved feel of the typing experience. This can make a day of work feel a lot better and can actually have some real, albeit small, health benefits. Additionally, there’s the collectible/hobbyist/community factor. With a dedicated and ever-growing community of mechanical keyboard fans, it’s easy to see the appeal of getting in on that.

Are mechanical keyboards loud?
It's common misconception, but no, not all mechanical keyboards are loud. Some of them, specifically those that use clicky switches can be, but mechanical keyboards are often as quiet as any other type of keyboard.
Are mechanical keyboards better for gaming?
They can be, but unless you're a particularly skilled gamer, you're unlikely to notice a performance difference. That being said, you are likely to enjoy yourself more.
Are mechanical keyboards expensive?
Not necessarily. They can be found for less than you might think. That being said, like any hobby there are ways to spend way too much money, so there's not really a maximum price when it comes to mechanical keyboards.
Are mechanical keyboards more ergonomic than normal keyboards?
They certainly can be, depending on the switches, the size, and many other factors. This question depends entirely on the ergonomic priorities of the person in question, so that's about as specific as we can get.
