Is there a limited number of insertions/withdrawals with the 12V-2x6 connector?

It is quite common for terminals of this type to boast a mating cycle life of 30 cycles. Not only do the 12V-2x6 connectors have this lifespan, but the standard Mini-Fit Jr. connectors and terminals, which are frequently employed in a multitude of computer connections, share this durability as well.

Is it bad to repeatedly plug and unplug a 12V-2x6 connector?

This does not imply that the connector will self-destruct upon reaching 30 cycles, but it's crucial to be aware of which cycles of removal and reinsertion are necessary, and which are not. While other connections in your PC typically operate at only about 50% of their potential power capacity, the 12V-2x6 connectors, especially when paired with high-end GPUs such as Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4090 and 5090, are expected to function at upwards of 90% of their power capability and even beyond.

Feel free to carefully disconnect and reconnect your GPU when installing any peripherals that might have the GPU in the way, or to move the GPU from one motherboard to another or during any upgrades that necessitate removing the GPU from its position. During these times, take a moment to meticulously inspect your connectors for any signs of wear and tear, discoloration, or other indicators of potential failure.

If your PC is not showing any graphics card-related issues, resist the temptation to unplug the connector just to "check the condition," as this action alone can inadvertently reduce its lifespan. If you frequently move the card around, such as if you are a bench technician, an overclocker, or a computer hardware influencer, for example, be sure to keep a detailed record of the number of insertion cycles you impose on your cables.
