5090 vs 4080 - Outputs

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 and the 4080 offer the following outputs in the Founders Edition configurations:

  RTX 5090 RTX 4080
Display Connectors 3x DisplayPort 2.1b, 1x HDMI 2.1b 3x DisplayPort 1.4a, 1x HDMI 2.1a
Maximum Display Resolution 4K @ 480Hz or 8K @ 120Hz with DSC, HDR 4K @ 240Hz or 8K at 60Hz with DSC, HDR

You can connect up to four displays per card. These can be four independent monitors at up to 8K resolution. When connecting two monitors at 4K resolution the possible refresh rate on the RTX 5090 is at 480Hz for each monitor, double that of the RTX 4080. Other configurations are possible depending on bandwidth. To find out more about the compatibility you need to check the technical specifications for the card you are purchasing.

5090 vs 4080 - Performance

The 5090 is truly a generational leap in performance, on paper at least. Whether or not the performance is justifiable at an MSRP of US $1,999, that is ultimately up to you to decide. At such a steep price, we can see that the 5090 is clearly showcasing its flagship capability. If you're a hardcore gamer who has stuck with the same PC build for a few generations, the difference will especially be night and day.

5090 vs 4080 - Power Requirements

Nvidia recommends a 1000W PSU for the RTX 5090.

However, power requirements may vary between models, so it's recommended to defer to the requirements of your specific graphics card model and manufacturer.

Still unsure how much power you need? Why not try out our PSU Calculator to get a more accurate recommendation based on your current set up.

What does this mean though? The socket on the card has changed in a way that makes connections more secure to ensure that the plug is seated properly. As improper connections lead to the melting and burnt plugs and sockets, this will ensure that this risk is reduced. So will you need a new cable if you already have a 12VHPWR cable in your current setup? The answer is no. 12VHPWR cables can be connected to 12V-2x6 sockets. So grab one of our 12VHPWR cables and you’re ready to power your fresh RTX 5090 with an adequate PSU.
