Why do CORSAIR PSUs not have a 12VHPWR plug?

PANA2190_import

With the introduction of the Nvidia 4000-series GPUs, a new power connector was also introduced: the 12VHPWR. Some power supplies on the market will have this connector on both the PSU, and the GPU end of the cable.

CORSAIR has chosen to have it only on the GPU end as our type 4 and type 5 8-pin connectors are already capable of delivering enough power to this new plug.

Why does CORSAIR PSU's not have a 12VHPWR connector on the PSU?

The 12VHPWR connector on the PSU side is not needed for PCIe 5.0 power requirements. Having two separate 300-watt connection points versus one 600-watt connection point on the PSU DC side distributes the heat load more evenly.

Is CORSAIR PSU's compatible with the latest PCIe 4.0 / PCIe 5.0 graphics cards?

With the addition of the CORSAIR 12VHPWR cable your PSU will be compatible with the latest PCIe 4.0 / PCIe 5.0 graphics cards (check GPU’s minimum wattage recommendation)

Newer ATX 3.0 certified CORSAIR power supplies will come with the 12VHPWR cable and will not require you to purchase this separately

What’s difference between Type 4 and Type 5 cables?

Type 4 modular connectors are physically larger than the newer Type 5 connectors and are not backwards compatible. You will not be able to use any Type 4 cables

on a Type 5 PSU. You can read more about the difference HERE

Jayz2Cent's video covers testing on our 12VHPWR cable that you can watch above. It shows the advantage of not using the standard adapter, and talks about why we only needed two 8-pins for our cable.

To go into more detail about this, the reason for us being able to use just two 8-pin connectors when the standard adapter requires four to be plugged in is that our type 4/type 5 8-pin connectors that plugs into the PSU are able to deliver 319W each. It is a frequent misunderstanding that each of these plugs are only able to deliver 150W as that is the PCI-e specifications, but that only applies to the ends that goes into the GPU.

This is also the reason why we are able to provide these types of cables with our PSU. As shown in the picture above, a single 319W type-4 / type-5 8 pin connector are able to deliver power to two 150W PCI-e connectors.
