Here are a few reasons why you would want a DDR5 over a DDR4. DDR5 has an improved overall bandwidth of up to 1.36x compared to DDR4 at the same clockspeed, giving it improved memory bus utilization. DDR5 can also run at higher clock frequencies than DDR4. But can you use DDR5 modules to upgrade a DDR4 or even a DDR3 motherboard?
The answer is no, DDR5 has a different pin layout than DDR4 motherboard. Both modules have key notches to lock them in place in the motherboard’s DIMM slot, but the pin layout on a DDR5 RAM module is different compared to a DDR4 module. The key notch locations on both RAM sticks look very similar at first glance, but if you stack them side by side, you will notice that the key notch on the DDR5 module is positioned more to the left, while the DDR4 is more to the right.
So, it is best not to attempt to install a DDR5 module into a DDR4 motherboard DIMM slot, or vice versa, as you risk breaking either the RAM module itself or the motherboard’s DIMM slot.
